Set sail on a mission to a green future

24 September 2022 — New Aden, the world's first second-generation eco-friendly VLCC fitted with four rigid sails made her maiden voyage. New Aden pays more attention to the optimization of the ship's operating performance, reduces the ship's operating fuel consumption, and enhances the ship's sailing performance in wind and waves. It is estimate that the tanker in operation will achieve an annual fuel savings of 9.8 percent and more than 2,900 tons of carbon. The vessel is also fitted with the latest SOx and NOx technologies to reduce emissions, meeting the EEDI and EEXI standards.

CMES Shipping strives to maximize energy efficiency through utilization of technology. On top of actively experimenting on new materials, skills, technology and equipment, other measures, such as effective management and advancement on ship equipment and technology, also help CMS to commit to our aspiration to run green ships.

In 2021, the cumulative emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxynitrides (NOx) of all fleets amounted to 17,900 tons, 5,944,700 tons, and 5,000 tons. A total of RMB161.95 million was invested in the technological transformation of energy conservation and environmental protection. In particular, desulfurizers were installed on the diesel engine of 43 ships and put into use throughout the year. Cumulatively, approximately 74,800 tons of fuel oil were saved, and the saved costs of fuel oil and lubricating oil were approximately USD25.22 million.

In addition, the Company earnestly publicized carbon reduction in the shipping industry and the innovation and R&D of green ship technologies. In the feature article, CMES' Intelligent Thinking and Carbon Outlook, published based on the interview by China Ship Survey, Capt. Xie Chunlin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CMES, shared the Company's advanced experience and his unique insights in "digital ships and intelligent shipping", ship decarbonization, and sustainable development. In the feature article, A Giant's Steps Toward a Clean World, published based on the interview by The Port of Hong Kong Handbook & Directory 2021, President Wang Yongxin shared how CMES utilized digitalization and decarbonization strategies to achieve high-quality development.
